Humming Puppy Yoga, Flatiron: Unified Hum.
Quick Details
- Class Name: Unified Hum (all levels yoga class)
- Location: Flatiron
- Trainer: Katey
- Price: $35 for a drop in, memberships start at $129
- Bring: Nothing — they set everything up for you — even a yoga mat
- Pro Tip: Be on time. Even if you’re a minute late, there’s no late entrance.
The Space:
- Vibe: Zen, relaxed, and welcoming. There’s free tea to enjoy pre or post class and soak up the beautiful environment.
- Cleanliness: Very tidy and clean
- Showers: Yes
- Rating: 10/10 — This is the most beautiful fitness studio in all on NYC
Diversity + Inclusion:
- Instructor diversity — Major lack of racial diversity on staff. Of the 14 teachers on the website, 3 consider themselves POC, though most are white presenting. There are no Black or Indian yogi instructors. We hate to see it.
- Class goer diversity — Little to no POC or body diversity in the class, but there was a wide age range within the class.
- Rating: 3/10
The workout:
- Best for: All levels
- Sweat level: Medium — it’s heated (approx 80 degrees) so you get a little sweaty, but you likely won’t be drenched.
- Worth the price? The price tag is a little steep for a yoga class, but going to go with yes. You don’t need to travel with your yoga mat, the vibe is extra relaxing, and there’s a humming frequency and sound bath at the end of the class.
- Can you do it at home? Between the heated room and the sound bath, it would be difficult to replicate this experience on your own.
- Rating: 9/10
Sweat Report Thoughts:
First impression is that Humming Puppy is breathtakingly gorgeous. There’s a giant crystal hanging in the lobby, plush velvet couches to relax and drink (free) tea, surrounded by sleek design. This studio is hands down the most beautiful studio in New York City. Plus, everything you need for a yoga class — blocks, towel, straps, even a yoga mat — is set up for you. All you need to do is show up.
The workout is equally as impressive. Teachers are knowledgeable and give plenty of options for all levels — necessary for a “unified,” all levels class. The flow is pretty standard and you can make it as difficult or easy as you’d like. What makes this class extra special is the humming frequency playing in the background of class. Lastly, class ends with a sound bath experience. This class is truly the chef’s kiss of yoga studios in NYC.
The biggest drawback about this studio is the lack of diversity and inclusion on staff. It’s hard to understand how in New York City, the biggest melting pot in the world, there’s a yoga studio where all the instructors are white presenting. Humming Puppy can do better. There was little to no ethnic diversity in class, however, there was some age and body size diversity, so that was encouraging to see at least.
If Humming Puppy decides to practice inclusive hiring, this studio could easily become a Sweat Report favorite. But we cannot in good conscience give this studio a 10/10 until their teaching staff has more representation. Until then, the TSR experience was an 8/10.
