Review: St. Mark’s Yoga in the East Village

Yoga shala in the dark, lit up by candle light

In the middle of the East Village in the Iconic landmarked loft building (up a couple flights of stairs) is where you’ll find St. Mark’s Yoga. The building has been around since the 1800s and has been home to a few different yoga studios over the years, and now belongs to a group of NYC yogis who’ve dubbed it St. Mark’s Yoga.

Quick Deets:

  • Class Name: Basics
  • Location: East Village
  • Trainer: Brian P
  • Price per class: $10/class

The Space

  • Vibe: St. Mark’s Yoga has the “new age-y” feel of a yoga studio of the ’90’s: It doesn’t have a ton of frills, but it’s a charming and welcoming studio and it’s clear that it takes yoga seriously.
  • Cleanliness: The studio felt on the cleaner side
  • Showers: No showers
  • Rating: 7/10 — St. Mark’s Yoga is a solid yoga studio. It’s missing some of the basics like showers or lockers that modern fitness studios have, but

Diversity + Inclusion

  • Instructor + staff diversity: St. Mark’s Yoga has a pretty diverse set of teachers. There’s definitely room for improvement, but overall it’s nice to see men and women of different ethnicities on their staff
  • Diversity in the class: Overall, this was a pretty diverse class. There were men and women, people of color, and different body types in class.
  • Rating: 8/10

The Workout

  • Best for: Beginners — Yoga newbies will
  • Sweat level: Low
  • Worth the price tag? Yes, this class is absolutely worth the price tag. (Only $10!)
  • Rating: 8/10

Overall thoughts from The Sweat Report:

The Basics class at St. Mark’s Yoga is one of the most interesting foundational yoga classes I’ve ever taken: Everything is slow and easy to follow, the instructor gave lots of feedback and corrections, and what made it feel so unique were the poses we did ie cat/cow with crossed legs. The thing that would have taken this class to the next level was how these unique poses relate to a traditional vinyasa.

Given how long the class held each pose — with a focus on technique — this class was actually a little more challenging than anticipated. I walked away feeling a little sore (in a good way).
