All Levels Power Yoga, Left Coast Yoga (Grand Ave)

yoga room with multiple people practicing yoga, standing in warrior pose

Left Coast Power Yoga is perfect for both beginners and experienced yogis alike. It is a great neighborhood studio with a welcoming yoga-focused community. The Power Yoga flow is a great class to build strength, tone, and sculpt — the class is advanced enough for seasoned practitioners, but can be modified for newbies.

CLASS: All Levels Power Yoga at Left Coast Power Yoga (Grand St. location).

Mondays 4pm-5pm

TRAINER: Kate Dedlow

Kate is an amazing yoga instructor and genuinely cares about her students. She introduces herself to everyone as they come into class and makes sure they feel comfortable, checking in to see if they need any special attention during the practice.

SWEAT:  8/10

It’s a heated class with lots of sculpting and strength poses — expect to sweat more than in your average yoga class.

LEVEL: This is an all-levels class so beginners are welcome.

APPROX CALORIES BURNED: 300-400

TOP 3 TAKEAWAYS:

  • Feelin’ Strong: Power yoga is no joke and involves a lot of strength movements like plank variations, squatting and more.
  • Get Cozy: Grab your mat and squeeze in. There’s a lot of yogis trying to get their downward dog on in this room.
  • Power Zen: This class is uniquely able to strike just the right balance of power and relaxation.

MUSIC: Expect the typical music that you would normally hear during a yoga class, but a little more on the lively side.

BRING: A mat, towel, and water bottle. They offer mats to rent for $2 and water for sale for $3 if needed.

CLASSPASS: Yes

Pro Tip: The changing area is fairly small, so it might be best to come already dressed for class if you can. Also, come early (15 minutes) to get a spot. The studio is small and fills up early!

THE WORKOUT

Kate is really great about coming around and introducing herself to everyone before class starts. She will let you know what props you need for class, ask about any areas of focus you may have and if there are any injuries she should know about.

Class starts with some basic movements to get the body moving. Throughout class there are regular vinyasa flows, so the flow is very similar to a vinyasa class. The difference being that there’s more emphasis on strength. Expect a lot of plank variations, moving knee to elbows and holding the position. There are also deep squats in chair pose, warrior poses, and lunge positions. There will also be opportunities for inversions and crow pose, among others for those who use those movements in their practice.

The class will flow fairly quickly, so don’t be surprised if you work up a sweat.
